Kumano is a region of Japan where Shugendo, the training path of mountain ascetics who test themselves in the sacred mountains, has been practised for over a thousand years. Shot entirely there, the film shows the Yamabushi monk Kosho Tateishi, a master and teacher of Shugendo, performing prayer rituals in nature and in his temple. In his practices, Kosho is in visceral contact with the natural elements (earth, water, fire, wind) and in fusion with sacred nature. Experiencing life through the physical senses awakens our consciousness and leads to the illumination of our body and spirit.

" This video from Mathieu Le Lay is a much more immersive glance at the life of an ascetic yamabushi monk in the Kumano area of the Kii Peninsula in Mie and Wakayama Prefectures. Featuring some absolutely breathtaking shots, this video truly transports the viewer into the mountains of Kumano and the fascinating life of the monks who live there, including an arresting shot of the three-story pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple before Nachi Waterfall. As captivating as the UNESCO World Heritage Site where it was filmed, this video must be watched from beginning to end. "
